Indian army discourages the usage of the term 'martyr'. The term usually used is KIA - killed in action.
Since he was not really on active duty, he can't be termed KIA though sad indeed.
Veergati is still another term used in hindi media.
Shahid is used in traditional media however still.

Martyr atleast officially is discouraged due to its relationship with 'religious war' - pakistan consider fight with india a religious war but we don't.

You're looking too deep into it which is deeply regretful.
I also know Shaheed term is Iranian used for people who died waging jihad on kafirs.
But as home to the largest muslim population on planet I think we have earned the right to use such terms as we want to.
Also this post is more about the courageous wife of the soldier who attained shaheedi.
Thanks for your concern on this important matter.
