I remember once that some dalitoid journalist and social rights activist demanded reservations in the cricket team when India lost another test series in England in 2018. He advocated for an experiment to have a lower caste individual captain the team and see it leading the national side to glory.
A typical case of how this fails is the South African Sports system with the only notable exceptions being Rugby and cricket to a very large extent.

There was an article about it - something something ccricket is liked by brahmins cuz of muh untouchability aspects or maybe something similar.
By the wire.

If you technically look at it, cricket wasn't entirely ever dominated solely by Brahmins. Until the 1970s in India, it was an elite game. In fact, it wasn't until the BCCI developed talent and research wings, the game spread more obscurely.

>indiscipline
I think this is the major factor. People kang about reservation etc. Most of the so called sochit vanchit politicians are busy talking about muh gibs but if i were them i would focus on building up a foundation which actually pursues discipline among such communities and guidance of those who were well off.
Sadly we are going in another direction where chaos and pursuing ideas like chapripana are cool - which result in just celebration of the kachra. No attempt at high culture at all.
Even the upper class has degraded.

now we have lobby, mumbai etc. obviously people with better resource are gonna make it.
IPL is probably the best thing that has happened - Mumbai Indians, CSK, etc. are teams which actively look for local talents or talents from ranji etc. and then they build them up for their team - helps everyone.
Jaishwal etc, raghuvanshi etc. are good examples ig.

Kambli became a unidimensional player because of this. My uncle told me that because of Dravid, Ganguly and laxman entering the team at the same time in 1996, Kambli was dropped because he just didn't want to improve his game despite the no. of chances given. Sachin by that time had become the most important matchwinner for India already.

Absolutely. These folks may or may not have long careers in the national team or a career at all, but IPL has given them a way to uplift them and their families out of downtroddeness and poverty.

Even Rohit Sharma came from a poor family. On the contrary, I would posit cricket is one field in the country where the caste/feudal/communal barrier simply never existed.

Not even Kohli comes close to the level of dedication sachin had. But two different type of players.
Sachin evolved his game. Kohli can't prevent himself from nicking anything going 4 stumps off.

damn i didn't know.
I remember how hated Rohit Sharma was in early days. Next level of luck tbh. Dhoni backed him. People who loved yuvi had extra hate boner for rohit.
>no barrier in cricket
probably, ig it's cuz how well developed cricket infra is in India.
You can take part in college sport -> win decent money -> can get into ranji -> ranji to atleast IPL pipeline is easy.

I think Kohli never felt the need to reinvent his game. We have had great batsmen alongside him in the team. Sachin however, had to carry out erstwhile shitass team throughout the 90s.

I heard this from somewhere, in 2015 a cricket Tournament was going on, now South Africa had one of the best team in the tournament and were likely to win
they performed really well too, but now what happened in semi final due to the rule of picking certain amount of black players in team they had to drop a white player, that player was performing really well in the tournament
Now this black player had a really bad match and causes south Africa to be eliminated despite having one of the best team

Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja were the two most hated players when they arrived at the scene. The former was declared the heir apparent to Tendulkar much before Virat Kohli's name even came up in the circles. Maybe destiny meant to reward him when his time came and that it did. The reason why Dhoni backed him was simply because he was the only top performer in domestic cricket in India and was just unable to cement his place in the middle order which made him volatile. That opening decision just changed his life.

Vernon Philander had to be picked in place of another batter or bowler. His style of bowling wasn't suited for that pitch and he was dogshit throughout the tournament.
Had SA won that match, they would have gone on to win the cup.

Yeah but they would have likely faced Australia in that final, Australia had rawdogged india in the semifinal of that tournament kek

They got it in 1999. Although they won the 2000 champions trophy.
1992- plain unlucky after rain played spoilsport in semifinal. Also, their first tournament after readmission to ICC (were banned for apartheid)
1996- Lost
1999- One of the greatest teams to lose in a tournament. Man of the tournament, most runs and most wickets all were south african ( a good substantiator would be India's '23 WC campaign)
2003- Steve Waugh's catch
2007- Disaster
2011- Lost QF to Newzealand
2022- Netherlands knocked them out
2023- Lost SF to Australia after blunder at toss.
2024- Lost a won match .
n2z.
I remember once an astrologer hypothesising that SA might end up with a hardfought t20 world cup win this decade but the chances are too low. Only a captain who is an orphan can make south africa win tournaments.

Misbehaviour when he was in the team. There was an instance where he dressed in drag to prank someone in public, while on tour. Then there are allegations of fights with the captain and the coach / manager.
When he was dropped for loss of form and misdemeanours, Dravid and Ganguly emerged. Getting back in Tests was ilalmost impossible.
Kambli changed his behaviour and became more focused. He played in ODIs in late 90s when Dravid was not considered for ODIs. He was in good form and was on his way to sort of establish his position in ODIs at least. However, he had a horrific on field injury where he twisted his ankle so bad, the muscle almost tore in two. SRT, who was fielding nearby almost gagged when he looked at the injury.
Rehab took months, by which time he lost fitness and the form.

West Indies bowlers on tour of 92-93 in India exposed his vulnerabilities against short pitch stuff which other teams readily capitalized. This combined with other behavioral reasons and the emergence of better young cricketers that others have pointed out also contributed towards the decline of a promising International career.
