Focus is now in tier 2 cities

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2026-02-05/india-allocates-billions-in-tax-revenue-to-small-cities-in-urbanization-push

>“It’s an unprecedented amount of devolution to local governments,” Srikanth Viswanathan, CEO of Janaagraha, a Bengaluru-based nonprofit that advocates for better city management, said to me. He estimates over $20 billion will go to cities with less than 500,000 in population. “This makes it plausible for our smaller cities not to make the same mistakes as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and urbanize well.”

Finally a fucking good thread. Thank you OP.

In general, buying land in Tier 1 is very expensive, with not too much gain in productivity. The main earning from these cities comes from foreign money and taxes. In terms of actual productivity, Tier 2 and 3 are much better.

One can also have a better QOL in general.

The only time , Tier 1 is better, is for dating. You have a larger pool of people to meet and interact with.

The key to that is in tier 2 and 3 city having a chance of building up which tier 1 city (outside maybe Hyderabad and Mumbai) didn't do. That plus better planned public transport.

Why does no one read the article before commenting?

>In a break from the past, close to half the funds allocated by the Finance Commission are not tied to specific projects and can be spent on locally identified needs. There are also grants for special infrastructure — such as wastewater management — in larger cities (population of 1 million to 4 million) and a one-time urbanization payout to merge villages with an existing municipality, like Dibrugarh intends to do.

They threw money initially at Tier 1, that is when they realised that most of the smart budget went into basics.

Cities are massive network of different systems, that all need to function really well to make a city function. Indian tier 1 cities are mostly a collection of villages with some skyscrapes and malls in between.

Cities like Bhangilore, Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi are curropt beyond redemption. So while govt is still throwing some money at them, the gains will be limited.

Tier 2 plans are metro's , automated systems , HSR's ,Special economic zones etc.

Tier 3 will have trams , walkable roads etc.

Both are expected to have more greenzones. Natrually, render vs reality depends on babu's. Hope my post helps

how will you fix this ? Make another "leave lundia" thread ?

Idk. There was a time when a road or flyover would take 15 years. Now it is done in a year or three, depending where you live.

also, QOL differs wildly across different states and cities depending on what you want.

The fundamental problem is that building 1 tier 1 city and nothing but villeges around it causes the tier 1 city to be flooded with more people than it can properly have the infrastructure to support.

In that regard, it's good for Delhi, Bangalore and the likes if more magents come up in their vicinity.

I don't know about Bangalore, but western UP, where RRTS connection with Delhi are being build should be a prime focus.

What about the existing city infrastructure bhangis?

The people are not the problem, the retarded design of sewage flowing in storm water drains is.

No Indian city has a sane drainage system and no is spending money on it.

All this money is going on repairing roads which will crack in 6 months so they can repair it again.

It's not their fault in the sense the state failed to create enough jobs elsewhere that they have to live like this here, but it's absolutely their fault if they end up squating in important land needed for development, which they always do.

The primary function of political parties is to keep power. Not to nation build. Nation building is a positive side effect that we sometimes experience.

Parties stay in power, by pandering to the masses.

Now , using Delhi as an example, any party that takes action on Delhites stealing power and water, will lose power. So no one will.

Due to this legalized loot, no serious company wants to work with Delhi government on power or water projects. This is not to mention the payment issues.

These complaints can be extended to all tier 1 cities in these domains and more.

Now tell me. How will you save cities from their inhabitants ?

> Gormint does nothing

No. Unlike popular belief. Governments do what people want.

The biggest positive of NRI ghar wapsi, will be demands for better living standards.

Not a bad idea. Hope they work on it. One of the reasons why Tier 1 cities are beyond repair is due to them getting overburdened. To reduce pressure from them developing tier 2 and tier 3 cities would be a good anti-doate.

Better Tier 3 will kill illegal squatters in Tier 1. These people want dignity too. Giving it to them, will relieve Tier 1's.

This is what I mean by reactivity, that makes discussion pointless.

Read original draft, then see who added what. It is far from being final.

People just read a news report, get offended without understanding head or tail.

Make no mistake, the clause added is offensive.

< Adani defence contracts

People do want that. I have visited their ports before. World class work. Full saaport saar.

> All politicians are vultures

This is such a meaningless untrue statement actually. Even the bad ones try to do something for their core voters.

Weather this is good for the nation or not is a different thing.

Mamata has done more for Bangladeshi refugees. 370 and Ram Mandir are massive wins for common Hindu's.

For development too there is a lot.

< Municipal level reform

As already informed in this thread,

there is work underway already. We will see.

There is lot criticism of goverment. But when you do it re-actively and sometimes dishonestly (as so many in opposition do), it only makes them stronger.

> Vultures in the sense they can see when the opposition has a weakness to exploit.

That is the job of any party and they should do it too. It keeps them accountable.

It becomes an issue when you attack without keeping the nation as context. Congress hating anything good Modi does is an example of this, which is why they will keep losing.

< When you can tie the local level municipal elections figure directly to the state of your streets sanitation and other issues, you can expect them to use it to attack them.

AAP got voted to power for freebies. Delhi got so bad that people were missing Sheila Dixit.

Jury is out on Rekha Gupta. Time will tell. But for most people, clean streets are a non issue. I used to hate this before, now I get it.

* most people are too tired and busy to care.

* Without freedom of religion (i.e. communal identity) , clean streets go down the priority list

* most people don't have disposable income to enjoy city streets. Outing is just food, because a lot of people strive for just that.

So nice Urban development is a good thought. But it will become a priority, once the basic income and purchasing power is higher.

Indian elites don't want this. Their business model including TCS, Infosys etc is running sweat shops of service sector. Others rely on poverty for cheap labour, servants etc.

Getting European kind of development, comes with more rights and pay for the bottom layer, which means rich families do not get access to many servants for throwaway prices.
