Peterson’s adage of cleaning one’s room to figure out and organise one’s life on a larger scale is, true but missing an important caveat.
It’s “Keep your room cleaned”, I cannot believe how much Ive been thinking about this, and maybe I’ve been myopic to this single Idea in life. Ive been keeping my room, my bed, my closet cleaned for about 10 days or so now, and I’ve already figured out what directions to take in life.
Peterson’s idea is that once you decide to clean the room, the way you arrange things and decide what goes where must be based on how it ought to be used, and so eventually it straightens out a knot that is your life. What he misses out on (but would ofcourse agree) is that you need to KEEP it cleaned, forever.
The cups for example, once you live without a maid you realise there needs to be a framework to keep the cups clean and not rotting with coffee and milk, It’s so hard to clean things that have rotten, that have gone disarrayed for ages, that I’d forgotten or maybe never known that it’s easier to just keep it clean. This leads me to the obvious realization, I can just keep my life maintained.
The desk REMAINS clean, every item is thrown out when it must, the bed is made CONSTANTLY, the chaadar is always puffed and laid, the closet is always used properly.
Ray Peat has a quote that I’ll paraphrase, when a person is forced to work or put effort into things he doesn’t necessarily choose, it spikes the body with all sorts of stress, but if it’s chosen upon oneself, the same tasks are restorative.
Everything works like this, you can jump in the river and swim or shiver uncomfortably in the cold, you’ll have to jump either way.
If you choose to stay on top of everything, it snowballs upwards, work, life, everything gets easier.

Peterson is midwit, who does not know how to debate. Only circular logic and no true scotsman
