When a distant Hindu chief from Sindh named Chandraraj, who was not even his vassal, came to Prithviraj asking for his assistance against the ravaging Ghurids, Prtithviraj stood true to his vow and marched towards the west of his borders somewhere in the Sutlej valleys to inflict a sound defeat on the Ghurids in 1183 CE and capture Mohammad Ghori.

The latter was released at the cost of war indemnities and a promise of paying regular tribute in future, for which an officer used to visit Ghazni, which we come to know from the Colophon of the Kalpasutra, as well as the Phalodi Mata temple renovation's inscriptions & further also finds a mention in the HammiraMahakavya. As a captive of Ghurids, Prithviraj underwent both torture & attractive offers to bend his knee. He could've easily accepted the vassalage of Ghori and retained his life as well as his Kingdom. But as a King, his reply was a resounding No! His refusals eventually led to his death, but Prithviraj didn't failed the test of Kshatra-dharma. Some self styled intellectuals claim Prithviraj lacked farsightedness and broader geopolitical awareness, especially about the mleccha threat. But when Ghori captured Lahore in 1186 CE, thereby completing his conquest of Punjab, we see an immediate churn in the politics of Prithviraj. He repaired his relations with Tomaras of Delhi that had gone sour since the death of Vigraharaj Chauhan (who married in Tomaras via princess Desaladevi ). Later we see Tomaras fighting beside Chauhans shoulder to shoulder in both the battles of Tarain. Prithviraj ceased the sporadic sparring of the past few years and concluded a peace treaty with Solankis despite having an upper hand against them, thus obtaining crucial peace on the southern front. Post Ghurid conquest of Punjab, Prithviraj and Ghori were already sharing borders and considering the topography and the nature of the rivalry, it is no surprise that the Ghurid forces had multiple confrontations with the Rajputs.

This is further corroborated by all the literary texts and was later confirmed by Professor RB Singh and Dashrath Dharma in their books History of the Chahmanas and Early Chauhan Dynasties respectively too. Prithviraj kept Ghurid forces away at bay for years in that great struggle for freedom, which included various small confrontations and a clear victory at the battle of Tarain in 1191 until the Ghurids finally prevailed in 1192 in the Second Battle of Tarain. Contemporary texts like Prithvirajvijaya speak fondly of Prithviraj. He was seen & respected as a man of commitment, value and ideology. It was not merely because the poet of the text Jayanaka was his courtesan but later texts and chronicles too, such as Hammira Mahakavya & Surjan Charita, remember Prithviraj as a great ruler. When Ziauddin Barani in his Tarikh-i-Firozshahi (1357 CE) had to introduce Hammirdev Chauhan, the mighty ruler of Ranthambore, he introduced him as a 'descendant of Rai Pithora of Delhi'. Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan was not an ordinary Kshatriya; he was one of a kind, the spiritual level, the level of mental strength, the physique, the abilities; he was perfect in every aspect; he had the "Kshatriyatva" in this kaliyuga; he was a perfect Kshatriya blessed with the ability called "Shabda Bhedi Baana".
