back in da day all boomers gen x and millenials (90%) of them got in thru sifarish even ias babus and army affsars. watch a few army podcasts and they will tell you how they did sifarish and begged a fren at london to just sit for the exam.

Then they also used to recruit post affise staff thru ssc mts chsl and cgl if I am right. I didn't venture ito this cause I wasn't sitting for theese exams and unless you were prepping for bank ssc having knowledge about these exams were useless cause state syllabus differs vastly from central ssc typesunless you were focused on the lower level state exams like constable and clerical of your state only then it would be worth it to also sit for lower level department wise exams.

Earlier than that they used top recruit postal staff on a fairly regular basis.

How did this pajeet get into it? was it GDS thru corruption and then there is an internal exam and if internal exam is anythang (even for state civil and union civil services group a ones) they are corrupt and you have ample amount of taime to cheat your way thru it and also there exists the possibility of someone you kno or could pay off to help your promotion. cause gds is a blaady contractual jaab and contractual jaab people were treated as coolies in most cases so it wasn't worth it to go that route specially at a taime when there are services that actually conducts exams free of corruption relatively speaking. yaar but there are no teacher recruitment nawadays unless you come from a really good state or those central level teacher exams. And pension only exists in state services that too in non bhajpa ruled states like the sauth ones maybe idk.
