Jats are a curious case. While most of them look nothing out of ordinary like the other castes in vicinity, a small section among them is shades lighter than others with sharp features. Also recent DNA analysis shows they have more steppe admixture than others.

This still doesn't explain their status in the caste system. They were untouchables in Sindh during the first Islamic conquest of India. Then they gradually moved towards the Punjab plains and Delhi, becoming settled agriculturists. There were than colonized by Rajputs, Turks and Mughals.

Some of their Gotras might've originated in places like Ghazni or on the Oxus who later moved to Indus valley after the Greek invasions. It's all really confusing.
