The simple answer is that South didn't have much unifying empires unlike North. Besides the famous Mauryas, Guptas, Mughals, Delhi Sultanate and such, there's minor ones like Harsha, Pala, Gurjara, etc... that united a pretty large chunk of North under one rule so a Lingua Franca evolved out of necessity. Urdu iirc, literally means military language to refer to the common language spoken among soldiers during delhi and mughal empires.
I also think gotra system might have been a factor as South Indian (indian)s tend to be endogamous and marry within the region while North Indian elites due to gotra system might have seeked marriage alliance outside their kingdom.
